Pressing the F2 function key allows you to edit the active cell. It can also improve editing in other Excel dialogs.

When you press the F2 function key it takes you to the end of the entry in the cell.
To go to the start of the entry press the Home key.
You can use left and right arrow keys to move around the entry.
Pressing the End key takes you to the end of the entry.
Editing in Other Dialogs
Sometimes when you edit a formula in one of Excel’s other dialogs like the Name Manager, the arrow keys will insert a cell reference from the sheet. This is frustrating. To avoid that press the F2 function key in the dialog and that allows you to use the arrow keys to navigate within the formula.
